  Org. Setting and Reporting

  The Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO) / Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the Department. Start date is February 2020, though applicants interested to take up an internship later in 2020 are also encouraged to apply. This position is located in the International Tax and Development Cooperation Branch. The Branch work progamme includes policy analysis and support to intergovernmental processes and capacity building on tax, development cooperation and other financing for development issues. It carries out DESA’s capacity development programme on tax, municipal asset management and other financing for sustainable development matters and serves as Secretariat to both the United Nations Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters and the Development Cooperation Forum.

  The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

  Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

  Responsibilities

  The position is located in the Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO) in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The intern will support FSDO staff in implementing a capacity development programme on financing for sustainable development, in particular issues related to municipal asset management and domestic resource mobilization, including international tax cooperation, aimed at strengthening the capacity of relevant authorities in developing countries to develop more effective and efficient tax systems and to combat tax evasion, with a view to increasing domestic resources available for investment in sustainable development. Duties may include but are not limited to: Assistance in drafting, reviewing and preparing presentations, studies, reports, training materials and any other relevant documents; Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings; Assistance during meetings; Research, compilation and analysis of information in tax matters, including in the areas of double tax treaties, transfer pricing, tax administration, tax base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS); Preparing and providing input for briefing notes, talking points, speeches and similar materials for senior UN officials; Following relevant intergovernmental meetings of the General Assembly and Economic and Social Council, and preparing draft summaries; Assisting with any other ad hoc assignments related to the work of the branch.


  Competencies

  The intern is expected to:

  - Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

  - Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.


  Education

  To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

  (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or

  (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

  Be computer literate in standard software applications.


  Work Experience

  Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.


  Languages

  English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
